The administration of medicated substances into the nostrils is called Nasya. This technique is a part of traditional Ayurvedic daily routines and is used as preventative health care as well as to correct imbalances.
Nasya soothes the nervous system and balances Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Physically: it will unblock the sinuses and aid your body in eliminating mucous from your sinus cavities. It will, in this way, reduce or eliminate chronic and acute sinusitis, headache, tinnitis, ear infections, memory loss and many other conditions related to the head and respiratory system.
Most of us have some level of stress in our lives – every day. Nasya helps our body & mind deal with the effects of stress as well as rebalancing us from previous stress. As well as the benefits mentioned, Nasya is also very calming, soothing and healing to the nervous system.
Our breath directly affects our state of mind, our nervous energy and our nerve cell activity. Since lubricating/oiling our nostrils affects the air we breathe in, Nasya has the ability to benefit our whole system. The most common form of nasya is simply applying black sesame oil to the inner nostrils. The simple practice of nasya with medicated oil (or plain black sesame oil) is a daily brain and vitality tonic, while soothing your nervous system, and strengthening your respiratory and immune systems.
- Simply draw up 2 – 5 drops of Nasya oil, then insert into your nostril.
- Sniff up strongly (try to sniff the oil to the back of your throat). Repeat with the other nostril.
- Massage around your eyes with a little of the oil on your fingertips. Start in the little groove at the inner edge of your eyes, then massage upwards and around. Stop at the little groove directly above the middle of your eyes, continue around your eye socket and stop again at the outer edge of your eyes. Keep going around 3 times. On the third time pause at the outer eye edge then continue massaging out and down to the groove under your ears.
Nasya is very easy and takes only a minute or two. It is excellent before and after air travel. It greatly reduces jet lag and other after effects of flying. It is great when coming down with a cough or cold as it helps clear mucous membranes. There are many benefits from regular Nasya.
